Lord_Executor, thanks a lot for that movie link! I was completely floored by Kacy's performance.
I recognized the first few obstacles from the course, so I guess I must have seen short clips from ANW somewhere on TV. Never seen anyone get particularly far, though.
I wanted to put Kacy's run into perspective, so I decided to look up a few things.

(Note: this post is going to be quite lengthy. Also note that most of the vid links go to videos intended to be available only for US viewers. I am in Sweden - I used hidemyass.com to be able to see those.)

In the beginning, there was (and still is!) Sasuke, the original Japanese obstacle course show. A competition is held about twice a year, where exactly 100 competitors enter Stage 1. There are four stages in total. In addition to being difficult, each stage also has a pretty harsh time limit. Competitors must complete a stage in time in order to move on to the next stage. About 2600 people have entered this challenge over the years. Only 3 (!) have made it all the way and scored a Total Victory.

This far, only one woman has ever completed Stage 1. (No idea how many women have competed, but it has to be at least a few hundred, eh?) That happened all the way back in Sasuke 2 (in 1998) when stunt woman Chie Tanabe (nowadays Chie Nishimura) did it. You can see it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HlorSgDwu1s  (at 7.17-8.40)

Nice run. I was especially impressed by how she handled the first and the last obstacle.
However, she didn't get anywhere at all in Stage 2 (same video, go to 16.30).

American Ninja Warrior
Main differences compared to Sasuke is that there is no harsh time limit (there is a time limit - you can't rest for 15 minutes even if you would need it - but it is generous) and that a set number of competitors move on from regional qualifiers, to regional finals and then to the national finals. In the later seasons, a field of 100 competitors get narrowed down to 30 in each regional quailfier, then down to 15 in the regional finals. The 30 and 15 best times, respectively, move on to the next step. If not that number of competitors manage to complete the course, they fill up with the competitors getting 'the furthest, the fastest'.

In seasons 1-3, the best competitors travelled to Japan to compete in Sasuke there. From season 4 and onwards, the national finals is held in Las Vegas, where a replica of the Sasuke course (Stages 1-4) has been built. In the two Las Vegas finals that have been held (seasons 4 and 5), noone has yet completed Stage 3. Brian Arnold holds the record. Last year, he reached the final obstacle on Stage 3. Brent Steffensen (Kacy's boyfriend) has reached the second furthest (quite far into Stage 3).

The current season is #6. The qualifying courses had six obstacles. The five regional courses differed in several obstacles (although they all ended with the Warped Wall) so you can't really compare times between them. As I understand it, a total of 500 people attempted the qualifying courses. 60 of these are women. For the first time in ANW history, there were some women that completed a qualifying course:

(obviously)Kacy Catanzaro, in the Dallas qualifiers. Of the 100 people competing, she came in 21st, well inside the required top 30 to advance)
Video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mirMEsFI07o&index=4

(a little hiccup there on Tilting Table, slower and less spectacular (=safer, really) Ring Toss than in the finals, and (if you didn't know how it was going to end), a true nail-biter finish!)

Then we have Michelle Warnky that got through the S:t Louis course, and got rewarded with position #19:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0YygpYEXFxQ&index=8

And finally we have rock climber and pole vaulter Meagan Martin, who completed the Denver course, coming in 22nd:

Season 6 (2014) regional finals.
This is where 30 competitors will get narrowed down to 15. The courses are now longer and considerably tougher. The first part is the whole (respective) qualifying course again, then there are 3-4 more obstacles. These also vary between the courses, but this year, obstacle #7 is always the Salmon Ladder and the last is always the Spider Climb. (A comprehensive chart of the obstacles used over the years can be see near the end of the wiki page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Ninja_Warrior)

Kacy's phenomenal run gave her position #7 and a place in Vegas. Yay!

Michelle Warnky's run at the S:t Louis finals:

I do not think the Denver finals has been held yet. Go, Meagan!

Gotta return a little to Kacy's Dallas finals run again. There is so much that makes it (and the video) so awesome:
- Kacy's athleticism and determination, obviously.
- Her charisma + just the right amount of playing with the audience. You can see that she loves both what she is doing and the attention. And then the 'crazy adrenalin eyes' getting ready for the last obstacle. Just wow.
- The crowd was not just excited, it was WILD in the later stages. And the sound editing was perfect, we could hear Brent's comments and that 'she's gonna jump' dude's as well.
- I generally dislike what most american sports commentators are doing. They generally talk too much and are too forced. But this was so awesome that the commentary fit just right.
- The fact that Kacy's short stature forces her to come up with her own solutions for some of the obstacles that were clearly designed with someone taller in mind. So for her, it's even harder than intented, and she still makes it!

(For example, take a look at how a taller person like Geoff Lancaster can handle the Swinging Frames and the Pole Grasper (obstacles #8 and 9):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZV-jnGSyEng
Still requires great strength, endurance and balance but because he is taller, it's possible for him to have more control there.)
